Due to the current COVID-19 situation, lessons are now available online via ZOOM, as well as in person.

In-person lessons are conducted in accordance with strict COVID-19 protocols:

  • masks are to be worn, and physical distancing practices observed when moving to and from the studio
  • a 6'x6' plastic screen separates the student and teacher areas of the studio.
  • all surfaces are sanitized before and after each lesson
  • at least one hour is allowed between lessons

Students are encouraged to check out flute mouthpiece shields at www.fluteairshield.com.

Lesson fees can now be paid by Interac e-transfer, as well as cheque or cash.

The Art of Practising Successfully
for Flutes and other Woodwinds
Intermediate / Advanced level

This two-hour workshop will help you make the most out of your limited practice time! Techniques and tips for approaching all kinds of finger and tonguing problems will guide you towards efficient, effective and SUCCESSFUL practice! Participants are encouraged to bring a sample of something they find difficult to present to the class.

Fitness for Flutists
Series of Six 90-minute Classes
(Intermediate and advanced levels)
October/November

This is "Boot Camp" for your technique! This series of classes is designed to build security in all keys, throughout the range of the flute. Designed after the Paris Conservatoire classes of the Golden Age of the Flute, we will work through the famous exercises and etudes in ensemble, each week building on the progress from the preceding class. By the end of the series, you should find that your playing has risen to a completely new and more secure level, allowing you to be more free to enjoy playing MUSIC! (Participants should be able to play a 3-octave chromatic scale in order to be comfortable participating fully.)

Pre-Performance Masterclasses
December / February / May

These classes are intended for those players who are facing an RCM exam, competition, audition or other performance and would like the opportunity to play for the group (and be evaluated, privately in writing if desired) in advance of your performance.


Original Toronto Flute Circle Workshops (all levels - youth & adults)
Series of Six Workshops.
(Classes occur approximately every 6 to 8 weeks. Three sessions will be held in fall 2017, three more will take place in winter/spring 2018)

This popular Performance workshop is back! We begin each 3-hour class with a group warm-up and technique segment, then the Masterclass format gives individuals an opportunity to play for each other, gain feedback and insights for progress, along with group participation of problem-solving tips, techniques and discussion. Ensemble playing will be included as time permits.

The Moyse Legacy (intermediate/advanced)

Explore Marcel Moyse's philosophy of tone development and interpretation through his Exercises, Etudes and Melodies.Each class will focus on one or two specific examples from De la Sonorite, 24 and 25 Etudes Melodiques and Tone Development Through Interpretation, examining how each develops to the next. Additional material from Comment J'ai Piu Maintenir Ma Forme will also be included.

7:00 - 9:30pm Mondays - 2 sessions.

Flute Ensemble Reading Sessions (intermediate/advanced)

These coached flute choir reading sessions will explore a wide range of styles and challenges through varied repertoire from Bach to Nancy Telfer's "Biirdflight(and lots in between!). Piccolos, alto and bass flutes are MOST welcome!

PROFILE

A Toronto native, Margot Rydall attended the Royal Conservatory of Music and University of Toronto, with further studies in London, England with international artist William Bennett OBE. Her other teachers and mentors include Peter Lloyd, Geoffrey Gilbert, Marcel Moyse, Nicholas Fiore and Robert Aitken.

After 44 years of teaching at the Royal Conservatory of Music, Margot is currently maintaining her private flute studio, and the Toronto Flute Circle classes and workshops. She is a senior wind examiner for the RCM College of Examiners. For 15 years, she directed the RCM Adult Flute Ensemble, and has taught technique classes and coached chamber music ensembles for the RCM.She teaches at Cardinal Carter Academy for the Arts, and has taught at the University of Toronto and the Koffler Centre for the Arts. As well as being a noted music festival adjudicator at both local and provincial levels. Margot has been a graduation recital judge for U. of T. and the Conservatoire du Quebec. She was responsible for the 1992 revision of the RCM Flute Syllabus and has conducted RCM exam workshops across Canada. For several years, Margot was Music Director, flute instructor and chamber ensemble coach at CAMMAC’s Ontaro Summer Music Centre.

In March 2007, Margot was the only wind presenter invited to lecture at the international Collaborative Conference of the Canadian Federation of Music Teachers Associations (CFMTA) and the American Music Teachers National Association (MTNA).

With a background in solo, chamber music and orchestral playing, Margot now performs exclusively with guitarist Ivan Zilman. Their ensemble DUO was formed in 1996, and brings together a lifetime of experience in Classical, Jazz, Rock and World Music. DUO has toured in Taiwan, British Columbia and Ontario and has performed on CBC/ Newsworld television. Their recordings DUO and Collabyrinth received critical acclaim across Canada. “an elegant sound that reaches out to a global audience” says Nancy Wilson of CBC television. DUO’s latest CD Reflective was released in 2007.

In May 2011, Margot received a congratulatory letter from His Excellency, the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor - General of Canada, in recognition for her 40 years of teaching at the RCM.
